I was one of those people who snickered and rolled my eyes in disdain whenever I saw a woman applying her makeup on the train. For some reason I felt like they were revealing some top-secret-for-our-knowledge-only secret to the male passengers by doing so. It felt like the time and place for glamming up was removed from the privacy of the home and plopped into the third row of a crowded Metra train during the morning rush.
1. If you wear makeup daily, people often comment that you look tired if you come to work bare-faced
This is exactly what happened to me this morning. I was welcomed by co-workers with “You look like you didn’t get a lot of sleep last night.” and my favorite “Oh, so it’s going to be one of those days, huh?” I slept like a baby, so it wasn’t sleep that I lacked just my usual eyeliner and blush.
2. Half of the folks on the train are in their own world, so may be the secret that I fear is being exposed isn’t a care of theirs at all!
Maybe I’m just trippin and being a stick-in-the mud about the middle-aged lady who applies her powder daily a couple of seats away, or the young (and obviously stylish) girl who sits next to me applies about 5 coats of mascara while we’re en route… (Even though her lashes look like spider legs by the time she finishes)
3. Those extra 10-15 minutes of sleep can make a world of difference
The reason I opted out of makeup today? I slept in. As much as I like to have a sun-kissed glow when I step into the office, the extra 15 minutes of sleep that I got today were SO worth the comments of my co-workers.
I still don’t think I’ll be jumping on the bandwagon of applying my makeup on the train, but the next time I see someone doing so, I’ll think twice before I give an judgemental side eye.
What’s your take on folks who wear makeup on public transportation?
Ciao Bellas,
