Box-braids are my jam—I feel extremely beautiful, regal and fly when I wear my hair in this protective hairstyle! I usually wear my braids for 6-8 weeks and during that time I want to ensure I keep my natural hair as healthy as possible, which means properly cleansing and conditioning my braids so they look and feel their best.
Here’s a tutorial on how to wash your box-braids.
What you need
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Towel
- Oil
The Process
Note: I usually wash my hair in the shower since the braids can get very heavy when wet.
- Rinse your hair with warm water.
- Next apply shampoo and massage it into your scalp and run the product down to the ends of your braids. Give your scalp a good scrub with the shampoo and rinse all product from your hair.
- Next massage conditioner into your scalp and work it down the shaft of the braids. Leave the conditioner on for about 5 minutes. Rinse and towel dry your hair.
- Wrap your hair in a towel or cotton T-shirt until your roots are dry.
- Lastly, lightly massage oil into your scalp using your fingertips. I use Olive Oil or Coconut Oil.
Once you’ve completed these steps your hair should be nice and clean and well-conditioned!

Thanks so much for the feedback! Appreciate you taking the time to stop by and check out the blog!
I just recently decided to get Senegalese twists and because my scalp is very dry it was necessary to wash them. I used the same method of in the shower with a shampoo to cleanse my scalp followed by a deep conditioner and olive oil. What else I used was my Curls gel to twist my frizzy’s back in place from my natural hair and let it air dry throughout the day.
I love your blog, I found it yesterday and woke up to log onto it early this morning to read more posts 🙂
Thank you so much Erica! I really appreciate your awesome feedback. I’ll definitely have to try your tip to use Curls to tame fizz! I definitely have to check out your blog!
