Hey B&B friends! You guys know I don’t like keeping secrets from you, especially not dope beauty secrets and tips. I wouldn’t say that oil rinsing is something new to the beauty industry, people have been doing it for years, but it’s fairly new to my hair care routine and my tresses are definitely reaping the benefits of giving it a try.
I’m really pleased with the results that I’ve gotten when I oil rinse my hair and I’m sharing the scoop on the benefits of treating your hair to this easy extra step in your wash routine and how to do it! Your hair will thank you for it!
What is oil rinsing?
Oil rinsing is an added step between washing your hair and conditioning your hair. It involves adding oil to your wet hair post-shampoo and pre-conditioning.

Oil rinsing helps fight frizz, boosts shine, it smooths hair which helps make the detangling process easier and helps locks in moisture.
Is oil rinsing for everyone?
As a woman with naturally curly hair, I’ve found that oil rinsing my hair helps me retain moisture and it’s easier for me to comb through it on wash day. While my dry, thirsty curls definitely appreciate this process, it’s not limited to only women with curly hair textures. Anyone who’s looking for the aforementioned benefits of oil rinsing should give it a go!
How often should I oil rinse my hair?
In my opinion, this is really up to the discretion of each individual. I oil rinse my hair once a week, but again some may feel the need to do it less frequently or more frequently.
How do I oil rinse my hair?
By now, I hope you’re sold on the benefits of oil rinsing your hair and want to know how to do it. I’ve got you covered, B&B friends!
Check out these easy steps to help you oil rinse your hair!
1. If it’s a regular wash day, start by cleansing your hair with shampoo. If you’re co-washing, just saturate your hair with water. Make sure it’s completely wet!
2. Part your hair into sections. I usually do four equal sections with one part down the middle vertically and another part horizontally. You may have to create more sections depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
3. Apply the oil of your choice to your hair in scalp. Look for natural oils like olive oil, avocado oil, amla oil, castor oil, argan oil and coconut oil and more! Don’t shy away from mixing a little oil cocktail, if you have some go-to oils that you love. Check out these awesome natural oils that are good for your hair for inspiration.
4. Use the tips of your fingers to gently massage the oil from root-to-tip. Stroke the product in a downward motion to saturate the hair with oil.
5. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and leave it on for 45 minutes to an hour.
6. Detangle with your fingers (my preferred method) a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush (Try a Denman Brush or The Wet Brush).
7. Next, rinse the oil out of your hair with hot water.
8. Finally, add your regular rinse-out conditioner and remove with cool water. Be sure massage the hair and rinse well to ensure that you remove all of the oil residue.
