Beauty has always been a pivotal part of my life. I grew up with a beutiful, stylish mother whose beauty shined inside and out and she instilled those values in me at an early age.
I was the little girl who would flip through the pages of Essence and Ebony magazines for hours admiring the beauty of the women scattered throughout the pages. I would scour through YM, Seventeen, and Teen magazines for fashion tips for hours. This is when I knew that magazines were my passion, but I wanted to be a fashion writer beauty editorial content was the last thing on my mind.
While studying print journalism in college, I applied for a fashion editor position with a local magazine. The editor contacted me and told me that position was filled, but the beauty editor role was still open. Beauty???! I was the girl who wore makeup on special occasions, I was the girl who like for my hair to be laid for the gawds, but I knew nothing about beauty! I was hesitant to take on the role, but I wanted to get my foot in the door at this publication, so I accepted the challenge.
Fast-forward to now and I’ve been blessed to snag a beauty internship at one of the very magazines that I grew up reading. That opportunity opened so many doors for me professionally! I’ve worked as a beauty editor, beauty director and have written beauty articles for several national publications and I currently work for one of the largest beauty companies in the world! Most importantly, I’m managing my very own style and beauty blog!
While I’m not a beauty professional in the sense of styling hair, doing makeup, shooting beauty spreads, or developing products, I love the contributions that I’m able to make within the beauty industry as a marketing and communications professional. I truly #sharbeauty every day that I walk through the door at work and every time I pen an article or blog post. How awesome is that?
