One trend that doesn’t seem to be losing it’s momentum in the F&B world is colored denim. One stylish starlet who has stepped out in just about any color that you can think of is Jessica Alba.
One of the biggest concerns about colored denim that I’ve heard (or even dealt with myself) is wondering where to start. How do you know which color(s) to get? What do you pair them with with? Will I draw too much attention to myself? So on…and so on.
These are all relevant and healthy thoughts to have. I was just reading an interview where Jessica stylist Brad Goreski (Love, love, LOOOOVE Brad!) said the first time he handed her a pair of red Broome Street jeans, and she said: “I just don’t know how to do colored denim.”
Brad gave her some awesome advice (which she obviously took in the above photo):
“OK, here’s what you do. You wear it with something neutral so the jean is like the standout thing and so, unless you’re gonna colorblock, you want to wear gray, white, black, something kind of neutral on the top. For your style, try like a black blazer and a white t-shirt and just keep it really cool.”
I couldn’t have said it better! Let’s recap Brad’s tips with a few of my own.
- Let the jeans be the statement piece
- Wear a neutral on top
- White shirts and blazers go a long way
- Draw inspiration from the colorwheel and see which colors complement each other.
- Don’t shy away from wearing a pair of green pants with a yellow shirt. You can always add a neutral cardigan or blazer over the look to mellow it out.
- Don’t be afraid to wear a bold pattern or printed blouse to complement the color
- Have fun and if you have a fashion faux pas, so be it! At least you gave it a try.
How do you rock your colored denim?
