Yesterday, the beauty world was shaken by the passing the legendary hair icon Vidal Sassoon to leukemia. Vidal was born in London, England and at 14 began his journey in the hair world with an apprenticeship in London. He said his mother encouraged him to style hair.
“I thought I’d be a soccer player but my mother said I should be a hairdresser, and, as often happens, the mother got her way,” he said in a 2007 AP interview.
By the 50’s Vidal opened his first salon and made his mark with his signature bob cuts. They were angled, light, innovative, impeccably styled and required little to no styling maintenance (AKA “wash and wear” styling).
By the late 60’s he made a name for himself across the pond with his famous Mia Farrow haircut from the movie Rosemary’s Baby (pictured above), and the launch of his very own product line in the 70’s. He also started the Vidal Sassoon Foundation, which supports organizations such as The Boys Clubs of America and the Performing Arts Council of the Music Center of Los Angeles.
Here are a few snapshots of Vidal living & creating his legacy:
We cannot display this galleryAs I read stories about Vidal’s life I can help but be amazed at his perseverance and obedience to the call on his life to be a hairstylist. It’s really encouraging and uplifting, right? RIP Vidal Sassoon; your contributions to the F&B world will continue to inspire and revolutionize hairstyling. Your gentle spirit will always be remembered.
Ciao Bellas,
