We’ve been taking family walks as a part of a new weekly bonding activity to get some fresh air, and I wish we would’ve started doing this sooner! It has been an amazing time of going unplugged and having conversations about our future goals and aspirations for our family and our careers.
The cherry on top is that my toddler son, TJ, loves it! Spending time outdoors is like chicken soup…it’s good for the body and the soul. That’s why I’m highlighting the health benefits of fresh air in this post!
I hope you’re inspired to get up and get out after learning about these 3 health benefits of fresh air.
1. Fresh air reduces stress.
During walks, I’m very intentional about having good posture and focusing on taking full belly breaths. (Yes, the yogi in me always present. LOL!) Providing your lungs with more oxygen leads to your entire body getting more oxygen. When you breathe deeply, the brain signals the body to be calm and relaxed, which alleviates stress.
2. Getting some sun boosts your immune system.
Vitamin D, is important for having strong bones and regulating the immune system. There are two versions of vitamin D that we’ll highlight here: vitamin D2 and D3. The primary source of vitamin D3 is sunlight, but you can also get vitamin D3 from fatty fish. Mushrooms are a great source of vitamin D2.
Black adults have the highest prevalence rate of Vitamin D deficiency, so slathering on sunscreen and soaking up some rays is a personal priority of mine. I was also told that it was very important for TJ to get some sun and take Vitamin D supplements from the time he was an infant. Taking family walks and getting fresh air has been a great way to prioritize our physical and mental wellbeing.
3. Fresh air gives you energy and improves concentration.
Let’s get back to the topic of oxygen. In addition to taking you out of fight-or-flight-mode when you practice deep breathing, increased oxygen intake also leads to better brain function. And this leads to better concentration and higher energy levels. So not only will you physically feel better but you’ll feel sharper and more focused after getting fresh air.
What health benefits of fresh air have you noticed?
