3 Ways to Get Out Of a Creative Funk

As a busy mama working full-time and building my @blackyogamom brand, I definitely find myself getting into a creative funk at least a couple of times per month.

Luckily, I’ve been able to test and learn ways to overcome those overwhelming hazy days of feeling uninspired and I’m excited to share them with you.

Here are 3 of my go-to tips for getting out of a creative funk.

1. Focus on your breath.

Our breath is our life force and that’s why it’s imperative that we are intentional about using it to enhance our overall well-being. The more oxygen that our bodies get, the less stressed we feel!

Anytime I feel like I’m in a creative funk, I instantly take a moment to focus on my breathing pattern. Is it short and shallow? Is it heavy and labored? Or am I breathing at my normal, natural rate?

I tend to slow down my breath and go into Dirga breath, which is three-part breath. To do it, begin in an upright seated position. Inhale through the nose so that your belly expands, your ribs expand and your chest rises and expands and , your ribs flare. Pause. Fully exhale and repeat. Do 5-10 rounds of this breathing an you’ll notice your stress and anxiety levels decrease.

2. Go for a walk… preferably outdoors.

I absolutely love when science backs up the advice I share with y’all! And in the case of walking helping with your creativity, this Stanford study says that it’s an effective way to help you get a second wind when you’re in a creative funk!

I try to go for a walk at least once a day, when I’m at the office for my 9-5, and now that It’s officially Fall, feeling the cool breeze is an added bonus! (Trust me it’s no fun sweating and burning up in the Florida heat!)

I also practice Dirga breathing when I take these walks to help bring more oxygen to my body. I usually like to walk alone in silence, but if that’s not your style, invite a friend or co-worker join you and brainstorm ideas.

Walking absolutely one of the best ways to get those creative juices flowing!

3. Get away from your desk!

A change of scenery can be just what you need to get out of a creative funk. There are so many beautiful coffee shops and creative, shared work spaces in the Tampa Bay Area, and I love checking them out and getting some work done while I’m there!

Sometimes, I’ll go to one of these spots alone, and sometimes I bring my team. Seeing different people, colors and art instantly sparks my creativity and let’s just be real… being at your desk no matter how cute it is can sometimes feel like the same-old-same! Give it a go and see how it works for you!

Scope out some cool spots in your area with strong wifi and a good vibe and see if you can work from there for a few hours!
